How to Share Your Theme
How to Upload/Post Themes
Got an awesome theme you’ve cooked up? Share it with the eVeek community
Uploading a theme is actually a very simple process…I will walk you through it
Exporting
Start by exporting your theme as an alx file (plus cod) onto your computer. Then, use winzip to compress the 2 (or more) files into a single .zip archive file. This makes it very easy for other people to download your theme as they only need to worry about getting one file
(
if you want to make it available for internet-supported BlackBerry users, then you’d also want to give them the .jad version
)
*Look below for help on sharing OTA style*
Posting
Start a new thread in the section called “
Themes
” under the heading “
Media Center
.”
Title your thread with the device and title/subject of your theme. A good example would be:
iPhone Zen: 83XX
Type in the appropriate theme information that you would like others to see in the post text box. Then, attach the theme .zip file to your post by hitting the “manage attachments” button. Keep in mind that you can host your file anywhere on a different server and simply provide the download link instead of having to attach the file to your post (this is preffered
), but you must host your own OTA files! If you do not have a server you can also host the .zip file on any public file hosting site such as rapidshare.com
Screenshots
What good is a theme if we can’t see it before we download? Make sure to
add screenshots
that way you can get feedback a lot faster!
To get images and screenshots in your post, all you have to do is upload your images to a photo sharing website, like photobucket.com, and simply copy and paste the IMG code into the post textbox! That will transfer the picture from the photosharing website and show us your creation
Another method could be to save the pictures as attachments in your post. This is actually not preferred as it requires viewers to wait for a new page to pop up and slows down the viewing process, but it’s your choice
And that’s it!! Follow these simple steps and you’ll be able to share in no time!
Servers and OTA Exporting
Start by exporting the theme using the JAD method instead of ALX. You should end up with a bunch of .cod files and one .jad file. Put all of these files into one folder and name it whatever you feel is appropriate such as the theme name. Then, download the ota.htaccess.txt file I’ve attached below. Copy this file into the theme folder along with the other .cod and .jad files. Upload the folder onto your server.
Navigate your way to the uploaded JAD method folder and find the ota.htaccess.txt file and rename it to only “.htaccess” (so get rid of the ota and txt part of the name but keep the period in front). And that’s it! Create a file path to the .jad file in the theme folder and share the url!
