You have to unzip the archive on your computer and install using your Desktop Manager.

Ye like DataCenter already said, extract the .alx file on to ur desktop or anywhere in ur PC and then use the DesktopManager program to load the application on to ur phone.

FielScout and Ziplorer are only good if you need to unzip files on your phone if they don't need to be loaded to your phone. Or zipping files to send to someone else, but that's about it.

Is there an app for the Blackberry that compresses files in the phone to save space? (compress files through the phone)

You can pick up ziplorer here on this site. Compresses and decompresses files on your BB.
