i actually figured it out. hurray.

i dl'd 4.3 desktop manager to match my 4.3 os on the phone. when that still didnt work i found on another forum the answer i've been looking for. only having the desktop manager is not enough to install apps on your phone! you also have to have the device software (match your os/carrier etc) installed on your computer. you can download this from blackberry.com. you just select your model, carrier, and the software you need to dl.

if anybody is having the "no additional applications designed for you device" message do this:

1. open desktop manager
2. click help
3. click about. this screen should have a list of phones the desktop manager is able to "talk" to. it has to be able to "talk" to your exact phone/os to be able to install apps, themes, etc. if no phones are listed (which was my case) or phones are listed that you do not have then you need to download the software (see above) for your device.
4. dl necessary software from blackberry.com and install on your computer.
5. retry. it should work now, and you're phone will be a lot cooler looking. lol

hope this post helps people find a quick answer as this took me a few days to figure out.
