As far as the 8830, you need to go to your messages folder, hit menu (blackberry key), general options, then towards the bottom, it gives you the option for "seperate folders." change it from combined or theme controlled to seperate if you want a seperate SMS/MMS folder. Mind you, it is theme controlled; if the theme you are using does not have the SMS/MMS folder included, it will not appear.
Also, following up to the issue that I had - come to find out, its a memory leak issue, not a service book issue... known issue for the curve

Problem
Email messages, personal identification number (PIN) messages and Short Message Service (SMS) messages are deleted due to low memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cause
Summary of Causes
This issue may be caused by the following:
The Application Switcher on the BlackBerry smartphone is setting itself as a system listener and is not being removed.
Switching between two applications on the BlackBerry smartphone using ALT+ESC about 25 times will cause a memory leak. From this point on, switching applications on the BlackBerry smartphone will cause an hourglass to appear for an extended period of time, which causes a large decrease in memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.
This is a previously reported issue that has been escalated internally to our development team. No resolution time frame is currently available.

Workaround
